Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
