Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative showcasing angels, evil spirits, and sinister influences increasing in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

The third episode concluded with a dramatic pause and presented the first table of heroes who will separate from the primary party to begin their own adventure, distinct from the other two tables.

This warrior group features Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis), the agile character (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

With 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be impossible.

That’s why, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, intertwining the individual narratives before dividing into three smaller tables: Warriors, Schemers, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

According to the DM, the warrior group is for players who prefer a typically action-packed fight-heavy gameplay experience where non-violent answers are rare.

Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might appear mismatched, but the events of episode 3 make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the party understands precisely where to go next after a violent opening clash with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose passing initiated the campaign’s events—exploited the foes for his own means, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking Thimble, and stealing all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The antagonist then settled his debts and escaped to a secure base in the northern region, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each member has a specific drive to depart the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, desires revenge.
  • Kattigan has experience in Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous location.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to eliminate Teor and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their status as prominent individuals in the powerful family could enable the party access areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character swore a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now follow him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are hunted by the rulers that rule the city for a range of causes, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and Wicander defied the influential house and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the clan.

This results in them few options but to travel to Timmony in quest for the traitor.

What’s Next?

According to episode three’s follow-up content, we discover that the combat party will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the players to assemble the Questers and Strategists parties.

Audiences can expect finding out which characters will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, streaming live on October 24.
