Roughly 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Police report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found multiple other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report early analysis indicate the fluid was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking political figure said the vandalism made him without words and had to be resolved quickly.
"This act hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on individuals of migrant background in 2020.
